Conservative Councillors shocked at cost to Council-Tax Payers of new Lib-Dem & Labour coalition

Colchester Conservatives accused the Liberal Democrats and Labour of saddling council taxpayers with a bill as the price of a fresh coalition deal. The news emerged in an email sent to all councillors.

Labour and Lib Dems look set to add another top political paid job to bring the total to eight, giving both the Lib-Dem and Labour Party four top jobs.

However, opposition Conservatives, who are the largest group on the Council with 19 Councillors, were surprised to see this at a time when the Council is cutting services.

Leader of the Conservative Group, Cllr Paul Dundas (Tiptree Ward) said “I am surprised that at a time when the Labour Government is sacking thousands of civil servants and pleading poverty, locally Labour and the Lib Dems are inventing well-paid jobs for themselves.
“When led by Conservatives, the Council functioned perfectly well with six portfolio holders and has been running fine with seven for the last two years. Expanding this to eight will likely result in more expenses paid to Councillors at a time when they keep saying they are short of money. I would urge the Council to think again about this.”
